Are you a classroom teacher who would like to prioritise wellbeing promotion within your classroom or school?

Maybe you are part of the school management team and would like to create a whole-school approach to wellbeing promotion?

Is your school currently focusing on wellbeing as part of the School Self-Evaluation process?

This course will enable teachers and school leaders to take a structured and focused approach to wellbeing promotion in schools.

Wellbeing promotion is a central tenet of education. As teachers and school leaders, we aim to educate the whole child and prepare them with the skills and knowledge to deal with life’s challenges throughout childhood and into adulthood.

This course will explore the concept of wellbeing and the importance of wellbeing promotion in schools. The course will delve into the four key areas of wellbeing promotion specifically outlined in the ‘Wellbeing Policy Statement and Framework for Practice’.

Participants will develop practical strategies of embedding wellbeing into the curriculum, the culture & environment, the policies & planning and the relationships and partnerships in schools.

This course will empower teachers and school leaders to lead or positively engage with the School Self-Evaluation process with a focus on wellbeing promotion.

Course Outline

Module 1 - Wellbeing in Education

This introductory module will explore the key concept of Wellbeing – What does wellbeing mean to you?

In this module you will:

  • Explore definitions of wellbeing.
  • Develop an awareness of protective factors and risk factors for wellbeing.
  • Reflect on your own experience as a teacher or school leader.
  • Become familiar with the School Self-Evaluation process.
Module 2 - Creating a Nurturing Culture and Environment

This module will explore one of the key areas for wellbeing promotion – The Culture and Environment.

In this module you will:

  • Consider the importance of the school culture and the intangible environment.
  • Explore the impact of the physical environment within a school.
  • Recognise the importance of staff wellbeing in creating a positive culture and environment within a school.
  • Identify strategies to enhance the school culture and environment.
Module 3 - Weaving Wellbeing Throughout the Curriculum

This module will explore one of the key areas for wellbeing promotion – The Curriculum.

In this module you will:

  • Differentiate between learning about wellbeing and learning for wellbeing.
  • Recognise the importance of achieving success through differentiation in schools.
  • Develop strategies for differentiation in your classroom.
  • Explore the curriculum areas of SPHE and PE and their impact on wellbeing.
Module 4 - Incorporating Wellbeing into Policy and Planning

This module will explore one of the key areas for wellbeing promotion – Policy and Planning.

In this module you will:

  • Develop familiarity with the “Wellbeing Policy Statement and Framework for Practice” document.
  • Be enabled to initiate or develop the School Self-Evaluation process with a focus on Wellbeing.
  • Recognise the importance of mitigating risk factors for wellbeing in schools.
  • Explore school policies required in relation to wellbeing.
Module 5 - Improving Relationships and Partnerships

This module will explore the last key area for wellbeing promotion – Relationships and Partnerships.

In this module you will:

  • Explore the importance of positive interactions and relationships between all members of the school community.
  • Develop an awareness of the benefits of partnerships without outside agencies.
  • Identify the importance of support systems within the school community.
  • Develop strategies to enhance the relationships and partnerships in the school.

Wellbeing is a core component of the new primary curriculum. This course aligns closely with the Wellbeing Policy Statement and will instil confidence in teachers in their approach to Wellbeing Promotion.”

Bio

Aoife is a primary school teacher from Galway. She graduated from Mary Immaculate College with a first class honours B.Ed degree. Aoife has taught in Mainstream, SEN and Special Class settings in schools in County Galway. She has a special interest in the area of Wellbeing Promotion and received a 1.1 in her Masters in Leadership of Wellbeing in Education from Mary Immaculate College in 2022.
